The Gold Coast Woodturners, a chapter of the American Association of Woodturners, was formed in 1992 to promote an awareness of the craft and art of modern-day turning.
Each meeting, held on the 3rd Thursday of each month at Western High School in Davie, except June, July & December, is designed and organized to present woodturning-related programs and projects to the members. Meeting demonstrations are also presented that may be performed by a GCWT member or a world-recognized guest turner.
No matter what is scheduled for the next meeting, the results will be the same. Woodturners will gather to share their experiences as well as learn from the experiences of others. All benefit, novices as well "old-timers" alike. Beginners learn techniques and styles, while the expert re-affirms their skills by demonstrating and teaching.
In addition, the Gold Coast Woodturners support a site that comprises 9 lathes and associated tooling and equipment where members can obtain hands-on training. Members gain knowledge of various tools and techniques, including finishing, while having access to various native woods such as mahogany, Norfolk Island Pine, sapodilla, mango, etc., all at nominal cost. Many a member has started out at the “shop,” and, as time goes on, purchases tooling and equipment that meets their needs based on the knowledge they gain during training. The “shop” is also a great place to investigate new ideas, then try them with the appropriate supervision.
Come to a meeting.
Next Meeting: November 15, 2018
The Gold Coast Woodturners meet on the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at Temple Dor Dorim, 2360 Glades Circlei in Weston, Florida. Meetings are about 2 hours long and generally have a demonstration and a Instant Gallery of works done by the Members.
Coming from 595 East or I-75 South follow signs to I-75 North to Naples. After the big curve get off on Glades Parkway. After you turn left under the highway go to Glades Circle North. Turn right and follow the road around. The temple will be the 3rd building on the left. If you miss Glades Circle North you can turn right at the next turn which is Glades Circle South. The temple will be the first building on the right.
